In a significant boost to Nigeria’s aviation logistics sector, the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) has commissioned a new domestic cargo terminal at Lagos’ General Aviation Terminal (GAT). The facility was officially unveiled on May 9, 2025, marking a pivotal step in modernizing the country’s air freight infrastructure.
Key Features of the New Terminal
✔ Enhanced Efficiency: Streamlined cargo processing for faster turnaround
✔ E-commerce Focus: Dedicated solutions for growing online retail shipments
✔ Agro-Export Support: Improved handling for perishable agricultural goods
✔ Tech-Driven Operations: Modern systems for secure and reliable logistics
Strategic Importance
FAAN Managing Director Mrs. Olubunmi Kuku (represented by Director Joy Agunbiade) emphasized that the terminal addresses critical bottlenecks in domestic cargo movement:
“This facility strengthens Lagos as Nigeria’s logistics hub while supporting businesses nationwide – from farmers to e-commerce platforms.”
Expansion Plans
The project, championed by Aviation Minister Festus Keyamo, is the first in a national rollout:
- Next phase targets Abuja, Kano, Port Harcourt, Jos, and Niger airports
- Part of broader strategy to build pan-Nigerian air cargo network
Sector Impact
The terminal arrives as Nigeria experiences:
Surging e-commerce volumes
Growing agricultural exports
Increased demand for efficient logistics
Industry Reaction: Cargo operators have welcomed the development, noting it will reduce delays and improve reliability in domestic freight services.
Bolbuk Insight: This infrastructure upgrade positions Nigeria to better capitalize on its $13 billion e-commerce market and expanding agro-export sector, while setting new standards for African air cargo operations.
